The Lutheran family in this country takes shape largely in two groups: The Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (
ELCA) and the Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod (
LCMS). Our differing features arise
primarily from our heritage: Scandinavian and Germanic. That which we hold in common--our
commitment to the grace of God which we know in Jesus Christ--is much greater than the sum
of our differences. University Lutheran Center embraces both of these traditions. They are
described as Lutheran Campus Ministry (ELCA) and
University Lutheran Church (LCMS).
University Lutheran Center was built in 1971 and is co-owned by the ELCA and the LCMS.
It houses the two campus ministries - each having its own pastor, staff, worship schedule,
and program. The Center has but one kitchen and one chapel--that's like two families
sharing one apartment. Conflict is avoided through scheduling and mutual concern for
each other. So we have the best of both worlds: preservation of our unique traditions
and conservation of cost through shared space.
